Evan Swanson

Hello and welcome to 6th and 8th grade Theology! I am super excited for this school year and I cannot wait to share the fullness of our Catholic Faith.

6th Grade

This course guides students through the story of God's plan for salvation as revealed in Sacred Scripture. Rooted in the Catholic understanding of the Bible, students will learn how to navigate and interpret Scripture, understand its divine inspiration, and see how God has continually reached out in love to His people throughout history. From Creation to Christ and the foundation of the Church, students will explore how the covenants of the Old Testament point to their fulfillment in the New Testament and culminate in the person of Jesus Christ. Emphasis will be placed on prayerful reading of Scripture, particularly through Lectio Divina, and applying its truths to daily life.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Explain what Sacred Scripture is and why it is important.
  • Understand how to read and use the Bible.
  • Describe the structure of the Bible and major biblical themes.
  • Recognize God’s covenants and their role in Salvation History.
  • Identify key figures and events in both the Old and New Testaments.
  • See how Jesus fulfills God’s promises throughout Scripture.
  • Apply the teachings of Scripture to their spiritual lives and moral choices.
  • Recognize the Church as the continuing sign of God's presence in the world.

8th Grade

This course prepares students to live as intentional disciples of Christ by exploring personal growth, Catholic morality, Church history, civic responsibility, and God’s plan for love and marriage. Through Sacred Scripture, Church teaching, and the lives of the saints, students will deepen their understanding of what it means to be created in God’s image and called to holiness. They will examine the moral decision-making process, the development of conscience, and how to live out their faith in family life, friendships, and society. The course also emphasizes the importance of vocation and the role of the Church in guiding us toward a life of love, service, and sanctity.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Recognize their dignity as children of God and their vocation to love.

  • Understand the moral teachings of the Church and how to apply them.

  • Form their consciences according to Scripture and Church teaching.

  • Reflect on Church history and the universal call to holiness.

  • Understand the responsibilities of citizenship and Christian service.

  • Articulate God's plan for love, marriage, and sexuality.

  • Develop habits of virtue, prayer, and reflection to guide moral decisions.
