Blessings for The New Year

Happy Catholic Schools Week!  Spanish Classes are going well.  We have been working hard on numbers and colors.  We have moved onto some calendar vocabulary.  Grades 1-3 have begun their class number timings.  Gr. 3-5 will learn or review how to write/say the date in Spanish.  It is different than in English.  Kindergarten learned about Three Kings Day and enjoyed Three Kings Cake/Bread.  The Kings were able to stop by and leave candy for all on Jan. 5/6.  Our Gr. 2-5 movie reward this year is "Coco".  We have begun listening to the movie in Spanish while reading the closed captions in English when each Grade 2-5 class has earned a behavior reward.  This movie has simpler vocabulary than some, allowing students to hear some Spanish vocabulary they already know.  As we move into February one of my favorite songs will be learned in Spanish, "Jesus Loves Me."

Third Grade:  (Wednesdays):

Class started with prayer.  We celebrated February and August birthdays.  Both classes then learned about the holiday, Candlemas, which is Feb. 2 every year.  The person who found the Baby Jesus in The Kings Cake on Jan. 6 is responsible for having a party to celebrate the presentatioin of Baby Jesus at the temple 40 days after his birth.  Tamales are usually part of the celebration as is hot chocolate.  Today the class tried Mexican hot chocolate while watching some song videos about chocolate in Spanish.  (See links below)

Class started with our greeting.  We watched a fun video of another Spanish teacher doing a month macarena with students.  We then enjoyed doing the macarena with a song in Spanish by Dr. Jean.  We opened our folders to pp. 37-39 and completed the months of enero and febrero.

WEEK OF JAN. 16-19

I am happy to report that once again The Three Kings are reported to have been able to visit all 3 of our elementary schools.  A candy treat was received by all.  The Kindergarten classes will enjoy a taste test of Rosca de Reyes in classes this week or next.

Class started with our greeting.  Students were excited that the Three Kings visited and left them candy.  They were able to see a real Rosca de Reyes and then got to taste test a kings cake I had made.  One student found a Baby Jesus in their piece of cake.  We watched a Dora The Explorer dvd about Three Kings' Day while we ate our cake.
