Monthly Updates

October

October is moving so quickly! The fifth grade students have been working really hard. In Math, we are almost finished with our study of adding and subtracting decimals using our knowledge of place value and various strategies we are working on in class. We have also worked on our map skills in Social Studies by creating Hands and Feet Maps. In Science, we are beginning to learn all about the properties of matter and changes that matter can undergo. We are going to begin writing paragraphs in a variety of styles. In Reading we prepared a reader’s theater called The Day the Colored Pencils Resigned. THe fifth graders really enjoyed getting to practice reading with fluency and expression and getting to perform their play for all of the other classes. Let’s finish the first quarter strong!

September

The month of September is flying by. The beginning of the school year has been extraordinary, productive, and full of joy at being together again. In math this month, we are talking about place value and different ways we can represent numbers. We have also started our first Reading unit. This week we are reading a story called A Package for Mrs. Jewls an excerpt from the book Wayside School is Falling Down. This week we are starting our first writing unit. We are remembering how to write complete sentences and put sentences together to make paragraphs. Last week, the fifth graders learned all about flag etiquette in preparation for taking on the responsibility of raising and lowering the flag every day! The month of September has been spectacular. I am so excited to see all of the wonderful things this class accomplishes this year.
