Host families represent the diversity of American culture. They are of varied economic, religious, and racial backgrounds and include working parents, couples without children, single parents, adoptive parents, empty nesters, etc. that are over 25 years of age. The most important characteristic of an SMG host family is the willingness to welcome a student from another country into your family and provide a safe, comfortable environment throughout their stay in the U.S.
SMG students are screened for social, emotional, and academic maturity. They speak English and have their own health insurance and spending money. We work with a family to pick a student that matches their interests and lifestyle. A Local Coordinator maintains contact with the student and family to ensure success and work through any adjustment issues.
Host families provide three meals a day, complete an online application, pass criminal background checks, are English-speaking, and treat the student as a member of the family. Our families receive a stipend to offset the expense of hosting.
